Pediatric Eye Exams

Should I Get My Child a Pediatric Eye Exam?

Taking care of your child is an important duty for every parent out there, and there are a lot of things you need to be concerned about. One of these concerns is to make sure your kid's ocular health is in good shape, and a pediatric eye exam is one of the best ways to do this. We at Springfield in Opticians in Springfield, Holmes, and Chadds Ford, PA are here to explain the process and why it's important.

Pediatric Eye Exams

What Does a Pediatric Eye Exam Entail?

In a lot of ways, preventative care eye exams for a child are much the same as an eye exam for an adult. They are, after all, testing for a lot of the same things, although there are issues that face adults that children tend not to have to worry about yet. In a lot of ways, however, an eye doctor from our practice will likely consider a pediatric eye exam as a very different process for them. Doing eye exams for children is also somewhat difficult, as children are less able to keep themselves focused, and may become irritated or upset by aspects of the procedure. Regardless, it's important to have preventative care.

What Kind of Eye Conditions Should I Look Out for in My Child?

An eye doctor from our practice will be attempting to detect specific things, in addition to doing the standard testing. One of the most common causes of a decreased vision among children is lazy eye.

There is another condition that our eye doctor will look for which is strabismus. This is fairly like lazy eye and it is when a person's eye is turned in a different direction than the other eye. Strabismus is typically diagnosed in children between one and four years of age and can even be born with it. It may also be passed down from one or both parents. It is also caused by weak eye muscles, nerve issues, and disorders that affect the brain, such as Down syndrome.
