At Springfield Opticians, serving Springfield, Chadds Ford, Holmes, and the surrounding regions, we provide eye care services to patients of all ages, but we want to highlight our specialized senior eye care services. We understand that seniors have unique eye care needs, and we are here to address them.
Glaucoma
Seniors are at a higher risk for glaucoma, an eye condition characterized by increased pressure in the eye, which can lead to damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. To assess for glaucoma, our optometrists will measure your eye pressure and perform a dilation test to examine the interior of your eye for any signs of damage.
Macular Degeneration
The macula, located in the retina, plays a crucial role in providing clear vision, especially in your central field of view. Factors such as smoking, obesity, and diet may contribute to macular degeneration, although the exact cause is still unknown. Older individuals or those with cardiovascular problems are at a higher risk. Macular degeneration can cause distorted or bent lines, among other symptoms. Fortunately, we can detect this condition through a standard dilation exam and specialized imaging. While we cannot reverse vision loss, we can slow down its progression and provide low-vision rehabilitation. In severe cases, we may refer you for surgery.
Cataracts
Cataracts are another common vision problem that becomes more prevalent with age. This condition involves clouding of the lens in one or both eyes, resulting in reduced vision, cloudy appearance, changes in color perception, and other symptoms. A comprehensive vision exam and slit-lamp evaluation can help us diagnose cataracts. In the early stages, corrective eyewear may be sufficient to address the vision loss. However, as cataracts progress, surgery may be necessary, and we will guide you accordingly.
Vision Screenings and Other Services
While glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts are among the most common eye problems we diagnose and treat in seniors, there are other conditions we address. We offer thorough eye examinations to optimize your vision, regardless of age. At Springfield Opticians, we have specialized services tailored to seniors, focusing on the issues that commonly affect them. Our experienced professionals know what signs to look for and when to assess for these problems.
